That answer was somehow worse.
Astrid reached into her purse.
“Thomas spent years investigating.”
She removed a flash drive.
“He discovered the insurance policy wasn’t the only thing created in your name.”
“What else?”
“A trust.”
I stared at her.
“What trust?”
“One created before we were born.”
I laughed nervously.
“That makes no sense.”
“It will.”
“Why?”
Astrid’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Because Hannah, there’s something Mom and Dad never told us.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“Thomas found our original birth records.”
Original.
That word stayed with me.
“Our parents are our parents.”
Astrid hesitated.
“Mom is.”
I stopped breathing.
“What are you saying?”
“Our birth certificate was amended when we were six months old.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know everything.”
She handed me the flash drive.
“But our biological father wasn’t Dad.”
I stared at her.
“No.”
“And whoever he was, he left something behind.”
