“Why didn’t he take you to a hospital?”
“He intended to.”
Astrid looked at me.
“Then another car arrived.”
The gray-haired man.
“He came down the embankment wearing some kind of official jacket. Thomas assumed he was emergency personnel.”
“But he wasn’t.”
“No.”
Astrid had been barely conscious.
But she heard the stranger ask one question.
“Is Hannah alive?”
I felt sick.
“He thought you were me.”
“Yes.”
Thomas corrected him.
Astrid said the stranger’s entire demeanor changed.
“He walked back toward his car and made a phone call.”
“What did he say?”
Astrid looked directly at me.
“He said, ‘Wrong twin.’”
My skin prickled.
Thomas heard it too.
He immediately understood they were in danger.
He hid Astrid in his truck and drove away before more vehicles arrived.
“But the authorities said someone died.”
“That came later.”
“Whose remains did we bury?”
“I don’t know.”
