“Did she?”
People nearby were beginning to stare.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Please don't make a scene.”
Daniel looked back at me.
Then he said something I had never expected.
“Three months after I left, I got an email from you saying the boys didn't want anything to do with me.”
I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.
“I never sent that.”
He reached for his phone.
“I still have it.”
His hands trembled as he scrolled.
Then he turned the screen toward me.
The sender's address looked almost identical to mine.
Almost.
One letter was different.
And beneath a paragraph I had never written were words that made my blood run cold.
The twins will be better off if you disappear completely. Don't contact us again.
I looked up.
Vanessa had already stepped backward.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“Tell me you didn't do this.”
She looked at the floor.
