Chapter 1: The Faces He Forgot.215

“How dare you show your face here?”

Those were the first words my ex-husband spoke to me after thirteen years.

Not hello.

Not how have you been.

Not even a startled acknowledgment that the woman standing before him had once shared his bed, carried his children, and believed his promises.

Just six words, delivered loudly enough that several people in the crowded university auditorium turned to stare.

I stood beneath the enormous glass windows of the Texas State STEM Championship venue in Austin, holding a plastic folder against my chest.

My name is Claire Bennett. I was forty-five years old that afternoon, and until that moment, I had genuinely believed Daniel Whitmore no longer possessed the power to hurt me.

I was wrong.

Some wounds don't disappear. They settle beneath the skin, waiting for a familiar voice to press against them.

Daniel stood beside a striking blonde woman wearing a cream-colored designer suit. Her handbag probably cost more than my monthly mortgage payment.
