Daniel looked toward the boys again.
“They're brilliant.”
“Yes.”
“They won the whole thing.”
“Yes.”
He pressed his fingers against his forehead.
“I had no idea.”
Something inside me hardened.
“You had every opportunity to know.”
He lowered his hand.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I sent photographs. Letters. Copies of school reports. Invitations to their birthdays.”
Daniel stared at me.
“Claire, I never received any of that.”
The words stopped me.
For a moment, the noise around us seemed to fade.
“What?”
“I never received letters.”
I shook my head.
“Don't do this.”
“I'm telling you the truth.”
“You stopped answering my calls.”
“Because you told me to stop contacting you.”
My stomach tightened.
“I never told you that.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
I followed his gaze.
She had gone pale.
“Vanessa?” he asked.
She said nothing.
“Did Claire send letters?”
Vanessa's lips parted.
“Daniel, this is ridiculous.”
