“Why were you sitting with Daniel today?”
“Because he asked me to testify.”
“Against me.”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“I was supposed to testify that your memory had become inconsistent.”
“It has.”
“Yes.”
The simple agreement irritated me more than denial would have.
Mark noticed.
“Arthur, I’m not going to lie for you.”
I said nothing.
“But I wasn’t going to say you were incapable, either.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me any of this?”
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.”
That stopped me.
Mark looked down at his hands.
“Daniel said Gregory believed guardianship was necessary. Gregory said Daniel had medical support. Vanessa told me not to give anyone original documents. Elena suddenly left. You were forgetting conversations. Everyone seemed to know something different.”
“And you decided silence was safer.”
“Yes.”
Rachel closed her notebook.
“Silence is rarely neutral.”
Mark nodded.
“I know that now.”
