The courtroom seemed to become smaller around us.

Judge Carter looked toward the bailiff.

“Is this child here with an adult?”

A woman stood from the last row.

“I’m her aunt, Your Honor. Maria Reyes.”

She looked nervous but composed.

“Sophie wanted to give the envelope herself. Her mother was very specific about that.”

Daniel stepped closer to his attorney.

“This is highly irregular.”

Judge Carter gave him a level look.

“So is an unexpected witness carrying evidence connected to a guardianship proceeding.”

Daniel stopped speaking.

The judge turned to Maria.

“Did you review the contents?”

“No, Your Honor. Elena sealed it herself.”

“When?”

“About six weeks before she passed away.”

My chest tightened.

I had not known.

Vanessa turned sharply toward me.

Even Gregory finally looked startled.

“Elena died?” I asked.

Maria’s expression softened.

“In May, Mr. Whitmore.”

I closed my eyes.

For a few seconds, the courtroom disappeared.
