“You people have no idea what you’re talking about.”
He pointed at Rachel.
“She disappeared.”
“I ran.”
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was afraid of you.”
Then my attorney spoke.
“And because someone threatened her.”
I turned.
“What?”
Rachel looked at Patricia.
For the first time, Patricia’s smug confidence vanished completely.
“After I confronted Kenneth about the money,” Rachel said, “Patricia came to my apartment.”
Patricia shouted,
“Liar!”
Rachel ignored her.
“She told me that if I went to the police, Kenneth would make sure nobody believed me.”
My attorney opened another folder.
“That’s why Rachel never completed the divorce.”
I frowned.
“She ran and changed her name.
Kenneth apparently assumed that eventually he could have her declared unreachable and quietly resolve the marriage.”
“But he didn’t.”
“No.”
I looked at Kenneth.
“So if we had gone through with this ceremony…”
“You would not have been legally married.”
