“The same thing Marcus wants. Ownership documents for the Halcyon Trust.”
My father’s letter flashed through my mind.
“Who owns it?”
“I don’t know,” Daniel said. “But your father did.”
A soft sound came from the staircase.
Noah stood halfway down, holding a stuffed dog against his chest.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s voice changed immediately. “Noah, go with Uncle James, okay?”
“Are you coming?”
“I’m trying.”
The front doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Evelyn checked the camera.
Agent Caleb Reed stood on the porch beneath a black umbrella.
He held up his identification toward the lens.
“Mrs. Mercer,” he called. “We received information about a potential threat. I need everyone to come with me.”
Daniel spoke sharply through the phone.
“Do not open that door.”
Reed rang again.
Vanessa backed away from the window. “Marcus could have sent him.”
“Or Daniel could be manipulating us,” Evelyn said.
Both possibilities felt believable.
