“What photograph was inside?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I let it ring once, then answered.
“Vanessa is with you,” he said.
I looked toward the window. No unfamiliar car waited outside.
“How do you know?”
“Because Marcus called me.”
Evelyn took the phone and activated the speaker.
Daniel continued. “Claire, you need to leave that house.”
“Why?”
“Marcus knows where Evelyn lives.”
Vanessa stood abruptly. “I didn’t tell him.”
“He tracked you.”
James came downstairs, carrying Noah’s backpack. He had heard enough to understand we were leaving.
Evelyn remained calm. “The investigators can arrange protection.”
“No,” Daniel said. “Do not call Reed.”
The name startled me.
“How do you know Caleb Reed?”
Daniel was silent.
“Answer me.”
“Because Reed contacted me before he contacted you.”
Agent Reed had claimed the investigators only connected the records after reviewing my files.
“What did he want?” Evelyn asked.
