My name was written across the front.
ARTHUR WHITMORE — PERSONAL. TO BE OPENED ONLY IF A GUARDIANSHIP PETITION IS FILED.
A second line had been written beneath it.
If Arthur cannot open it himself, give it to the presiding judge.
The judge looked at me.
“Mr. Whitmore, do you consent to my opening this?”
“Yes.”
My answer came faster than anything I had said all morning.
The seal broke with a soft tear.
Judge Carter unfolded three pages.
She read silently.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Daniel’s attorney leaned toward him and whispered something.
Vanessa watched the judge.
Gregory stared at the floor.
Finally Judge Carter lifted her head.
“This hearing is suspended until I can review this material properly.”
A murmur rolled through the courtroom.
Daniel stood again.
“Your Honor—”
“Sit down, Mr. Whitmore.”
He did.
The judge looked toward me.
“Mr. Whitmore, the letter raises questions concerning the completeness of the medical records presented to this court.”
