Daniel sat.

“I knew he wanted another evaluation.”

“That is not what I asked.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

The word landed heavily.

Anger rose inside me.

“You knew.”

“I knew he thought medication might be affecting your concentration.”

“And you filed anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Because you stopped taking calls from me. You cancelled the follow-up. You fired one home nurse after she reminded you about medication. You tried to approve a major property sale and then forgot the meeting the next morning.”

“The sale never happened.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“It is part of the point.”

He looked exhausted.

“So what was I supposed to do?”

“Talk to me.”

“I tried.”

“Try harder.”

“I did!”

His voice rose, then immediately softened.

He looked toward the door as though embarrassed by the sound.

“I did,” he repeated.

“I came here eleven times in March.”

I had remembered perhaps four.
