Vanessa folded her arms.

“That sounds like Gregory.”

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“He always believed disorder was more dangerous than almost anything else.”

Rachel nodded thoughtfully.

“Elena also says Gregory told her Arthur’s estate plan would become difficult to administer if questions arose about capacity.”

I almost laughed.

“Difficult for whom?”

No one answered.

The next morning, Gregory requested a private meeting.

Rachel insisted on attending.

We met in a conference room at his firm.

The walls displayed photographs of Gregory shaking hands with men whose names appeared on buildings.

He entered carrying no briefcase.

For once, he looked less like an attorney than a tired man nearing seventy.

“Arthur.”

I did not offer my hand.

“Did you start the guardianship discussion?”

He sat slowly.

“Yes.”

No elaborate denial.

No argument.

Just yes.

I had prepared myself for deception.

The admission unsettled me more.

“Why?”
