The coach knew my name—but what he revealed about Dustin changed how I could protect my daughter - usnews

Whatever insult he expected never came.

I walked past him.

That bothered him more than anger would have.

Ray followed me into the main gym.

“Jack.”

I stopped.

He lowered his voice.

“There’s something else.”

Dustin looked over.

Ray waited until we were near the entrance.

“Your daughter talked to me last week.”

“About what?”

“She asked questions about the business.”

I frowned.

“What business?”

Ray looked uncomfortable.

“The gym.”

“What kind of questions?”

“Ownership. Insurance. Accounts. Who handled payments.”

“Why?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

Dustin approached.

“Ray, shut up.”

Ray ignored him.

“She asked whether I knew why some membership payments were appearing twice.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Dustin swore under his breath.

Ray’s eyes sharpened.

“Actually, Dustin, your reaction is making me think I should find out.”

Dustin’s confidence had begun slipping.

Not collapsing.

Just thinning around the edges.
