On the back of the photograph, Lauren had written:
She waited for you that
day, too.
Dominic stared at the words.
The house seemed to tilt around him.
He had spent years convincing himself that providing a luxurious life was the same as being present.
Lauren had handled the little things.
School forms.
Doctor appointments.
Birthday gifts.
Bedtime stories.
He had handled the important things.
Business.
Money.
Properties.
Investments.
That was how he’d explained their marriage to himself.
Now, sitting on the floor of his daughter’s empty bedroom, he realized how wrong he’d been.
The important things had been happening while he was somewhere else.
And he had missed nearly all of them.
That evening, Dominic’s mother, Margaret Mitchell, arrived without warning.
She found him in Sophie’s bedroom.
“Dominic?”
He didn’t look up.
“Lauren left.”
“I heard.”
“She took Sophie’s things.”
Margaret sat beside him.
