“Lauren,” he whispered, “please. I know
I’ve made mistakes. Just tell me where you are. Let me come.”
He stopped.
What could he possibly say next?
I’m sorry I forgot our daughter?
I’m sorry I spent that afternoon with another woman?
I’m sorry I waited until you were gone to understand what I had?
He ended the call without leaving a message.
Then he noticed something on the floor beneath Sophie’s bed.
A small envelope.
His name was written across the front in Lauren’s handwriting.
Inside was a photograph.
Sophie stood in the backyard wearing a yellow raincoat, holding a blue butterfly drawing.
Dominic recognized the picture immediately.
It had been taken the previous Sunday.
He had told Lauren he couldn’t join them because of a business meeting.
Later, he’d spent two hours helping Vanessa choose a venue for her birthday celebration.
