“That’s good.”
“He’s also taken a step back from several businesses.”
I said
nothing.
“He delegated the hotels. Sold part of the shipping division. He says he doesn’t want his entire life to be work anymore.”
I looked toward the evening sky.
For years, I had begged him to slow down.
Now he was doing it.
But not for the reason I’d once hoped.
Margaret continued.
“He’s struggling, Lauren.”
“So am I.”
“I know, sweetheart. I’m not asking you to come back.”
I swallowed.
“Thank you.”
She hesitated.
“There’s something he did that I think you should know.”
I stopped beside a bench.
“What?”
“He established a scholarship fund in Sophie’s name.”
My heart tightened.
“What kind of scholarship?”
“For children whose families face financial hardship. It includes assistance with early education and transportation.”
I closed my eyes.
The subject was painful.
