***For months, I believed my husband had finally noticed how exhausted I was and found a way to help. Then one unexpected afternoon exposed a secret hidden inside our own home, forcing me to question whether his care had ever been as selfless as I believed.***

“You’re Ethan’s wife?”

The woman standing in my  kitchen went so pale that, for a moment, I wondered whether she was the one who had come home sick.

“Yes,” I said. “I’m Mallory.”

Her eyes shifted toward the hallway, toward my husband’s home office.

Then she whispered, “Finally.”

I had left work before noon with a stomach bug and a headache that made every light feel painfully bright. Until that moment, my only plan had been to crawl into bed.

Instead, I was standing in my kitchen staring at Rosa, the  cleaning woman my husband had hired four months earlier.

I knew her name.

We had never met.

Ethan had arranged everything.

For the past year, work had been consuming me. I left before seven most mornings and returned after six, then made dinner, did laundry, and answered emails until I was too tired to think.

Three years earlier, I had lost my job and spent months unemployed.

Ethan had covered most of our expenses and sat beside me through rejection after rejection.

I never forgot that.

So when he suggested hiring someone to clean once a week, I nearly cried with relief.

“You shouldn’t come home exhausted and start scrubbing floors,” he told me.

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

“Who are you, and what have you done with my husband?”

He laughed and kissed my forehead.

“Let me take care of you for once.”

Wednesdays quickly became my favorite day.

I would come home to clean floors, fresh sheets, and sometimes flowers Ethan had left for me.

I thought hiring Rosa was one of the kindest things he had ever done.
