The little girl had replied:
“When my mommy was alive, she dressed up like a bunny and danced for me every birthday. Now nobody wants to do that anymore.”
The next day, John returned wearing a pink dress, high heels, and bunny ears.
“But why that particular outfit?” I whispered.
Susan smiled through her tears.
“Because it was the only bunny costume he could find. When the children saw him, they started laughing. And Lily smiled for the first time in weeks.”
I looked at my husband.
In all the years I had known him, that man had never even danced with our own children.
But Susan wasn’t finished.
“A few weeks later, we discovered that Lily needed additional expensive medical equipment for her rehabilitation. Insurance wouldn’t cover the full cost,
and her grandmother couldn’t afford it.”
John had volunteered to help.
At first, he donated part of our savings.
