I had a baby at 79, and my children went to court to have me declared mentally incompetent—But when the judge asked
who the baby’s father was, the courtroom door opened…
When the judge entered the courtroom, my daughter wouldn’t even look at me. She sat on the other side of the room
beside her brother, clutching a folder full of documents tightly in her hands. I stood beside my lawyer, holding my three-
month-old daughter in my arms.
Little Emily was sleeping peacefully with her face pressed against my chest. She was so tiny and innocent that it was difficult
to believe her birth had brought our family to court.
“Mrs. Miller,” the judge said, addressing me, “your children claim that you are no longer capable of making decisions for
yourself. They are asking for control over your medical care, your property, and the custody of your baby.”
I looked at my daughter, Susan.
“Do you truly believe I’ve lost my mind?”
She finally raised her eyes.
“Mom, you’re seventy-nine years old. Three months ago, you returned from the hospital with a newborn and announced that
she was your daughter. You refuse to tell us who the father is, where the baby came from, or why you’re planning to leave
your entire fortune to her.
”
“I haven’t given her my entire fortune.”
“Not yet,” my son Michael said coldly. “But your lawyer has already prepared the documents.”
