Chapter 1: The Faces He Forgot.215

“But she listened,” Owen continued. “Even when she was tired.”

He swallowed.

“And when we told her we wanted to compete against schools with expensive laboratories, she didn't say we couldn't.”

Eli leaned toward the microphone.

“She said we'd have to work harder.”

Owen nodded.

“And we did.”

I pressed my fingers against my lips.

The auditorium became quiet.

Then Eli said, “Our mom raised us by herself.”

Across the room, Daniel's head lifted.

“She taught us that not having something doesn't mean you stop trying.”

Owen continued.

“And she taught us that the people who stay are the ones who matter.”

The words struck me so deeply that I barely heard the applause.

I lowered my face.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because for the first time in thirteen years, I felt as though someone had seen the entire weight of what we'd survived.

When I looked up, Professor Whitcomb was smiling at my boys.
