At my sister’s baby shower, my 5-year-old daughter tugged my dress and said, “Mommy, Daddy told me not to tell you what he and Aunt Lisa do when you’re at work” — before I could ask anything else, my sister rushed over, took her by the hand, and said, “Honey, don’t make things up.”

Chapter 1: The Secret My Daughter Couldn’t Keep

At my sister’s baby shower, my 5-year-old daughter tugged my dress and said, “Mommy, Daddy told me not to tell you what he and Aunt Lisa do when you’re at work” — before I could ask anything else, my sister rushed over, took her by the hand, and said, “Honey, don’t make things up.”

If there’s one thing about five-year-olds, it’s that they’re awful at keeping other people’s secrets.

Thank God for that.

My sister Lisa was seven months pregnant, and since her boyfriend disappeared the moment he found out about the baby, our whole family had truly rallied around her.

My husband, Callum, had been helpful too.

He and Lisa had never been especially close, but she’d been stopping by more often during her pregnancy, and they always seemed friendly enough.

I never gave it a second thought.

Then, in the midst of Lisa’s baby shower, while everyone was chatting and opening gifts, my daughter Ellie tugged on my dress.

Callum was standing only a few feet away, helping me gather up some wrapping paper.

“Mommy, Daddy told me not to tell you what he and Aunt Lisa do when you’re at work.”

I laughed at first.

“What are you talking about, baby?”

But before Ellie could answer, Lisa rushed over, grabbed her hand, and said, “Honey, don’t make things up.”

Something about how instantly she reacted made me uneasy, and when I looked at Callum, he seemed just as stunned that Ellie had said it out loud.

“Lisa,” I said, “let go of my daughter.”

She started rambling about how kids misunderstand things, but now I had to know what Ellie meant.

I crouched in front of her.

“Sweetheart, what did Daddy tell you not to tell me?”

Lisa tried to interrupt again, but I stopped her.

Ellie looked at her dad, then at Lisa, and finally back at me.

Then she started explaining.

And by the time she finished, I was staring at all three of them, completely speechless.

What did Ellie reveal about Callum and Aunt Lisa?
