Oprah Winfrey — From Poverty to the World's
Stage
A girl with nothing became one of the most powerful voices on the planet.
Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi, into a
life where the odds were stacked so heavily against her that almost nobody would
have bet on her future. She wore dresses made of potato sacks. She was moved
between homes. Her early years were marked by hardship that would have
broken most people.
But Oprah discovered something early — she could talk, and people listened. She
learned to read before kindergarten, and her grandmother taught her to recite
verses and poems to the church. On stage, in front of a crowd, a shy girl became
fearless.
At nineteen she became a local news anchor, the first Black woman to do so in
Nashville. Broadcasters told her she didn’t have the “right look.” She ignored
them. She built a talk show, then an empire, then a legacy of lifting others. Today
her name means hope to millions. She proved that where you start never decides
where you end.
