Daniel began receiving mysterious phone calls.

Whenever I entered the room, he lowered his voice.
One evening, I overheard him speaking to someone.
“Are you absolutely sure? If Emily finds out, everything will change.”
My stomach tightened.
Then I heard him say something that nearly broke me.
“Fine. Bring the evidence on Saturday. My mother will be there.”
Evidence?
What evidence?
Had my husband already started preparing divorce papers?
On Friday evening, Daniel finally approached me.
“Emily, Jessica is coming to our house tomorrow.”
I stared at him.
“The woman your mother wants you to marry?”
He nodded.
“Please trust me. There’s something you need to hear.”
I pulled away from him.
“After everything we’ve been through, you’re bringing another woman into our home?”
He looked devastated.
But again, he offered no explanation.
The following afternoon, the doorbell rang.
Jessica stood outside wearing a cream-colored dress.
She was beautiful, with long brown hair and nervous blue eyes.
