That evening, Daniel wrapped his arms around me.
“Sweetheart, I married you because I love you. Not because I need you to give me children.”
I believed him.
But his mother had other plans.
My mother-in-law, Patricia, was 61 years old, wealthy, controlling, and obsessed with having grandchildren.
When she learned about my diagnosis, she stormed into our house.
“FOUR YEARS!” she screamed. “FOUR YEARS YOU’VE WASTED MY SON’S LIFE!”
“Patricia, please,” I whispered.
“Don’t you DARE tell me to calm down! YOU’RE BARREN!”
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“My best friend Susan has a beautiful daughter named Jessica. She’s twenty-eight, healthy, and ready to start a family. DIVORCE EMILY AND MARRY HER!”
I waited for my husband to defend me.
But he remained silent.
And that silence hurt more than his mother’s insults.
That night, I cried until morning.
Things only became worse over the following week.
