A Father Started Charging His 18-Year-Old Son $250 a Month for His Room – Five Years Later, the Young Man Received a Box That Turned His Life Upside Down

I stared at him.

"You're an adult now."

"You're charging your own son rent?"

"You're an adult now."

"It's my birthday, Dad."

"Then consider this your first lesson in responsibility."

I waited for him to smile, but he simply returned to his coffee.

Something went wrong.

I'd already been working part-time, but I started taking extra shifts stocking shelves at a grocery store. Between rent, groceries, gas, and my own expenses, there was barely anything left.

Whenever I managed to save a little, something went wrong. My car needed repairs, my hours got cut, or my work shoes started falling apart.

Meanwhile, Dad occasionally came home with beer or new fishing gear.

"Work hard enough."

"Must be nice having money for hobbies," I muttered once.

He heard me.

"Work hard enough, and you will too."

At nineteen, I finally scraped together enough for a used microphone and audio interface. I spent my evenings recording songs in my bedroom, hanging blankets on the walls to improve the sound.
