Risk Factors Matter Too
Symptoms are only one part of heart health.
Several factors influence cardiovascular risk, including:
- High blood pressure
- High LDL cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Physical inactivity
- Obesity
- Family history
- Increasing age
- Certain kidney conditions
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Poor sleep
- Chronic stress
Having a risk factor does not mean that a person will develop heart disease.
But knowing your risk factors gives you an opportunity to address them.
Don’t Ignore Changes in Exercise Ability
One of the easiest things to overlook is a gradual change in physical ability.
Suppose you could previously walk for 30 minutes comfortably but now become unusually breathless after 10 minutes.
Or perhaps you used to climb several flights of stairs but now need to stop after one.
There are many possible explanations.
You might be recovering from an infection.
You might have become less physically active.
You could have anemia, a lung problem, or another condition.
