“Why you?”
“Because my mother filed the claim.”
Evelyn moved closer. “Who is your mother?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Margaret Cole worked for Eleanor Mercer. She managed the household accounts before Eleanor died.”
The room seemed to narrow.
“What does that have to do with Northstar Advisory?” I asked.
Vanessa’s eyes widened. “You know about Northstar?”
“My father did.”
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
“Then we have less time than I thought.”
Her story came slowly, interrupted by long silences.
Years earlier, Eleanor Mercer discovered that Daniel’s father, Richard, had been moving money through Northstar. She believed he was hiding assets during their marriage. Margaret helped her copy records.
Before Eleanor could speak to an attorney, she died in a car accident.
Daniel had always been told she lost control on a wet road.
Margaret never believed it.
“Are you suggesting Daniel’s father caused the accident?” Evelyn asked.
