Marcy smiled.
“This is nice.”
Ray nodded.
“We’re trying.”
He introduced us to his son from the photograph.
Evan was twenty, studying physical therapy at a community college.
He shook my hand.
“My dad says you’re terrifying.”
Ray sighed.
“I never said that.”
Apparently Susan had permanently damaged his reputation.
We stayed for coffee.
Nobody mentioned Frank until I asked.
Ray said the legal case was still ongoing.
Frank had sold one warehouse and withdrawn from several businesses.
Thomas Vale had lost clients.
Dustin was training at another gym two towns away.
“He’s working construction too,” Ray said.
Marcy nodded.
Nothing more.
That was enough.
On the way home, she asked me to stop at a small house with a FOR RENT sign.
I looked at her.
“What’s this?”
“I have an appointment.”
“With who?”
“The landlord.”
Ellen smiled.
She already knew.
“You’re moving?”
Marcy nodded.
