“That makes no sense.”

“Legally, it raises significant questions.”

I admired attorneys who could make alarming things sound like weather reports.

“What did Frank say?” I asked.

Ray laughed once without humor.

“He blamed Vale.”

“Do you believe him?”

“No.”

Ray was learning.

Susan continued.

“We have referred the records to the appropriate financial investigators and Ray’s bank. We’re not drawing conclusions beyond what the documents show.”

That was exactly how it should be.

Facts first.

Stories later.

“What does this mean for Dustin?” Marcy asked.

Ray became quiet.

“Frank admitted that some of the money went toward Dustin’s career.”

Marcy looked down.

“Did Dustin know?”

“I asked.”

“And?”

“He knew Frank was moving money. He says he didn’t know where it came from.”

“Do you believe him?”

Another pause.

“I don’t know.”

That answer no longer frustrated me.

Sometimes not knowing was the beginning of wisdom.
