The contract transferred a percentage of the gym’s revenue to Mercer Athletic Consulting.
Ray’s signature appeared at the bottom.
But beside the signature was a date.
Ray had supposedly signed the agreement three years earlier.
The company had only existed for eleven months.
“That’s impossible,” Marcy whispered.
I looked at the sender again.
No name.
No explanation.
Then another message arrived from the same address.
This one contained only a sentence.
Ask Ray where the original loan agreement is.
I called Ray immediately.
He answered on the second ring.
“Jack?”
“Where is the original loan agreement for the gym?”
Silence.
Then I heard him exhale.
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“My brother kept the originals.”
“Can you get them?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because Frank called me twenty minutes ago.”
