I almost ignored it.
Then I remembered that avoiding people rarely produced information.
“Carter.”
“It’s Ray.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“I found the missing footage.”
I sat straighter.
“How?”
“The system keeps backups for seven days.”
“Why didn’t you mention that last night?”
“Because I forgot.”
I almost laughed.
Apparently everyone in my life had forgotten something important in the last twelve hours.
“What does it show?”
“I think you should see it.”
“Send it.”
“I’d rather explain.”
“No.”
Silence.
Then Ray said, “Fair.”
Ten minutes later, a video arrived.
I called Marcy into the kitchen.
“You don’t have to watch.”
“I want to.”
We played it.
The hallway appeared.
Marcy came out of Ray’s office.
Then another man followed.
Mid-fifties.
Dark suit.
Silver hair.
He carried a large envelope.
Marcy moved aside to let him pass.
Dustin approached from the gym floor.
He noticed the man.
