Maybe both things were true.
People were rarely one thing.
Marcy looked from me to Ellen.
“That’s why I was at the gym Tuesday. I confronted Ray.”
That surprised me more than anything.
“What did he say?”
“He said he had never heard of the company.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I don’t know.”
She swallowed.
“But after I left his office, Dustin was waiting in the hallway.”
I remembered the footage.
The missing seconds.
“The camera skipped,” I said.
Marcy stared.
“What?”
“Two seconds were missing.”
Her face went pale.
Then she whispered something that made Ellen grip her hand tighter.
“Dad… there shouldn’t only be two seconds missing.”
“What do you mean?”
Marcy looked straight at me.
“Because I wasn’t alone in that hallway.”
The room seemed to grow colder.
“Who was with you?”
She shook her head.
“I never saw his face.”
