Six Years Later, I Found Evelyn at the Airport With Two Children Who Looked Like Me

The next six years became a blur of hotel openings, investment meetings, business trips, renovations, and contracts.

Staying busy was easier than repeatedly asking myself why someone I loved had walked away without speaking to me.

And now she was sitting only a few yards away.

With two children.

Suddenly, one of them woke up.

The little boy lifted his head and looked directly toward me.

Something about his face immediately caught my attention.

He had dark, slightly wavy hair. The shape of his face reminded me strangely of childhood photographs stored in my family albums.

Then I noticed a small feature near his eyebrow.

I had the same one.

I reminded myself immediately that resemblance alone proved nothing.

People notice patterns when they are surprised or emotional.

Still, a question I had never expected to ask entered my mind.

I looked at the other child.

They appeared to be twins.

About five years old.

Without meaning to, I began calculating dates.

That was when Evelyn opened her eyes.

For a few seconds, she seemed disoriented.

Then she saw me.

Her expression changed instantly.

She sat upright and gently drew both children closer.

I took one cautious step forward.

“Evelyn.”

She stared at me.

Finally, she spoke.

“Marcus…”

Hearing my name in her voice after six years brought back every unanswered question at once.

I didn’t know where to begin.

“I thought you never wanted to see me again,” I finally said.

Evelyn looked genuinely confused.

“Is that what you were told?”

I frowned.

“I was told you wanted to leave and that I should respect your decision.”

She looked down for a moment.

When she met my eyes again, she didn’t seem angry.

Mostly, she looked exhausted.

“Marcus, I never asked you to forget me.”

Around us, airport announcements continued and travelers hurried past with their luggage.

I barely noticed them.

My attention returned to the children.

“How old are they?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Five.”

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was probably someone from my team asking about the meeting.

I ignored it.

Boston could wait for a few minutes.

“Evelyn, I need to understand what happened.”

She took a slow breath.

“Then you need to hear what happened after you left.”

I said nothing.

She rested one hand gently on the shoulder of the child beside her.

“Not long after your trip, I learned I was expecting them. I tried to contact you.”

My thoughts stopped.

“I never received anything from you.”

“I know.”

Her answer surprised me even more than everything else.

“How could you know that?”

Evelyn paused before answering.

“Because what happened between us wasn’t as simple as you were led to believe.”

She didn’t accuse anyone.

She didn’t make dramatic claims or ask me to accept her version without question.

But her words were enough to make me reconsider six years of assumptions.
