For six years, I had convinced myself that Evelyn had chosen to leave my life without an explanation. Then an unexpected flight delay put her directly in my path again.
She was asleep in an airport terminal with two young children beside her.
One look at them was enough to make me question everything I thought I knew about the past.
That morning, however, my only concern had been getting to Boston.
At forty-four, I managed several boutique hotels and was preparing for an important meeting involving the acquisition of a historic property. My team had spent weeks working through the details, and I intended to be there when the final discussions began.
I had arrived at the airport early.
Everything was going according to plan until the departure board announced that my flight had been delayed for technical reasons.
I immediately called my financial director.
“Start the meeting without me if you have to. I’ll join you as soon as my flight is cleared to leave.”
After ending the call, I walked away from the crowded gate and searched for somewhere quiet to work.
That was when I noticed her.
A woman was sleeping near the large terminal windows with a slightly worn blue suitcase beside her.
Two small children rested nearby.
One was curled close to her. The other had fallen asleep with a hand resting on the handle of the suitcase.
At first, they were simply another tired family waiting for a flight.
I probably would have walked past them.
Then the woman shifted in her sleep and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
I stopped.
It was such a small gesture, but I remembered it immediately.
Evelyn.
For a moment, I wondered whether my mind was turning a stranger into someone from my past.
I moved a little closer.
Six years had changed her. She looked tired, and there was a seriousness in her expression that I didn’t remember. Her clothes were simple, and she seemed completely different from the woman I had last seen years earlier.
But there was no mistake.
It was Evelyn.
The woman I had once imagined building a future with.
And the same woman who had disappeared from my life without ever personally telling me why.
