My Mother Fed the Homeless Boy Behind Our House for 20 Years — After Her Funeral, He Took My Hand and Said, “Your Mother Kept the Truth from You”
“I thought you wouldn’t come.”
I held the pot tightly against my chest.
Then I recognized him.
Not from his clothes or his face, which had filled out and grown older.
I recognized his eyes.
“Dorian?”
He smiled, but it looked uncertain.
“I brought dinner,” I said. “But what happened to you? How is this possible?”
He took the pot from my hands and set it on the hood of the SUV.
Then he reached for both of my hands.
“Your mother hid something from you,” he said. “Before she died, she begged me to keep her secret. You’d better sit down.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
We went inside the house.
Everything remained almost exactly as Mom had left it. Her reading glasses were on the counter. A faded dish towel hung from the oven door. The apple-shaped clock above the sink still ticked.
