Adrian lowered his eyes. “Hello, Clara.”
She studied him for another moment, then turned back to me. “Sofia made me promise not to contact you unless danger found you through the Cross name.”
“The Cross name?” I asked.
Clara nodded. “Your mother did not hide from Adrian forever because she hated him. She hid because Malcolm Cross had made it clear that any child connected to that family would never truly belong to herself.”
Adrian flinched, but Clara did not soften the truth.
“When Sofia discovered she was pregnant with you,” Clara continued, “she came to me first. She was terrified and happy at the same time. She loved Adrian, but she did not trust the world around him. Not after what happened with the first pregnancy.”
“The miscarriage,” I said.
Clara’s eyes filled.
“Yes. But that was not the secret.”
The room went utterly still.
My heart gave one hard beat.
