“Of Victor?”
“Not only Victor.”
A cold prickle moved through me.
Marianne placed a sealed plastic evidence sleeve on the side table. Inside was a folded program from the memorial service.
“What is that?” I asked.
“It was delivered to the hospital front desk this morning. Addressed to Emma Frost.”
Adrian crossed the room. “Who delivered it?”
“Courier. Paid in cash.”
I stared at the program.
My own photograph smiled up through the plastic.
Marianne turned it over.
On the back, written in neat blue ink, was a message.
He knew about the baby before you did.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The machines around me seemed suddenly too loud.
“What does that mean?” I whispered.
Marianne’s eyes lifted to mine. “That’s what we need to find out.”
I thought of Victor’s strange excitement when I told him I was pregnant. Not joy, exactly. More like satisfaction. I thought of the appointments he insisted on attending, the vitamins he arranged, the doctor he preferred.
