I had been saving it.
Now the name felt like something rescued from the snow.
“Julian,” I whispered.
Dr. Walsh smiled. “That’s a beautiful name.”
After they left, Adrian returned with a woman in a navy coat and simple pearl earrings. She had silver-streaked black hair, sharp eyes, and the composed bearing of someone who had spent her life in rooms full of secrets.
“Elena,” Adrian said, “this is Marianne Voss. She is an attorney.”
Marianne approached my bedside, not too close. “I’m sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances.”
“Are you my attorney or his?” I asked, glancing at Adrian.
A small smile touched her mouth. “Yours, should you choose to retain me.”
“I don’t have my purse.”
“You can pay me one dollar when you feel better.”
“I have hospital socks and trauma.”
“Then I’ll accept the socks as a retainer.”
I looked at Adrian. “I like her.”
