My husband shoved me off an icy cliff while I was nine months pregnant because he thought my life was worth less than a fifty-million-dollar insurance payout. - usnews

Slowly, he sat again.

“Victor has debts,” he said. “Private investments gone bad. A failed property acquisition in Miami. Loans through companies that do not advertise their interest rates. On paper, he still looks wealthy. In reality, he is balancing on a wire.”

“And Serena?”

“Serena Vale has been receiving transfers from an account linked to Victor’s consulting firm. Large ones.”

My chest tightened. “So she knew.”

“We do not know what she knew.”

“I saw her at the cliff.”

Adrian’s gaze held mine.

“She was there,” I said. “She asked if I was dead.”

“That matters,” he said softly. “But what it means will depend on more than one sentence.”

I wanted to hate him for that answer. I wanted him to promise that Serena was every bit as guilty, every bit as monstrous. But his restraint steadied me in a way blind fury could not.

Victor had lived by assumptions. By shortcuts. By bending reality until other people doubted themselves.
