He read the first page.
Then his mouth fell open.
“Miami?” he said.
Vanessa leaned across him.
“What?”
He turned the document toward her.
“A penthouse.”
Vanessa grabbed the photographs.
They showed an enormous apartment overlooking Biscayne Bay, with floor-to-ceiling windows, pale marble floors, a private terrace, and a glittering blue swimming pool.
“Oh my God.”
She pressed one hand against her chest.
“Oh my God, Jared!”
For the first time since Thomas’s funeral, she looked genuinely happy.
“Do you understand what this is?” she whispered loudly.
“This is one of the most exclusive residential buildings in Miami.”
Jared stared at the pictures.
“Dad never mentioned owning anything in Miami.”
“He had investments you weren’t involved in,” Eleanor said evenly.
Vanessa was already studying the building’s name.
“People would kill for this address.”
Then Eleanor turned to me.
“Leah, Thomas left you this.”
My envelope was thinner.
