At first, every canvas became a picture of Sophie.
Yellow butterflies.
Pink dresses.
Little hands reaching toward the sun.
Then,
slowly, other images appeared.
Mountains.
Water.
Trees.
The Toronto skyline at sunrise.
I wasn’t forgetting my daughter.
I was remembering that I was still alive.
Meanwhile, the legal separation continued.
Dominic and I worked through our attorneys to resolve financial matters and the future of our shared assets.
We approached Sophie’s memorial arrangements with particular care, agreeing that neither of us should use them as leverage in the separation.
The process was painful.
There were documents I could barely bring myself to read.
There were questions about possessions that once seemed ordinary but now felt unbearable.
Who would keep Sophie’s first pair of shoes?
What would happen to her photographs?
How should we preserve her artwork?
Eventually, we agreed to create two identical memory albums.
One for Dominic.
