He was quiet for a long time.
Then he whispered, “Because you couldn’t trust me anymore.”
I nodded.
“And because I couldn’t keep living in a house where every room reminded me of the future we lost.”
He looked at me.
“Is there any chance we could start again?”
I stared at him.
For a moment, I remembered the man I’d fallen in love with.
He had been charming.
Ambitious.
Generous.
He used to bring flowers to my office.
He used to dance with me in the kitchen.
When Sophie was born, he had cried while holding her for the first time.
Those memories were real.
But so were the others.
The missed birthdays.
The broken promises.
The evenings I sat alone waiting for him.
And the final afternoon when our daughter waited too.
“No,” I said softly.
Dominic seemed to stop breathing.
“Lauren, please.”
“I don’t hate you.”
