I stared out the window.
“
Do I have to?”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
Simple.
Powerful.
I remained silent for a moment.
Then I said, “I’ll meet him. One hour. Somewhere public.”
Rebecca arranged a meeting room at a downtown hotel.
When I arrived, Dominic was already there.
He looked different.
Thinner.
More tired.
The expensive suit was still there, but the confidence I’d once found so attractive seemed to have disappeared.
He stood when I entered.
“Lauren.”
I nodded.
“Dominic.”
He took a step forward, then stopped.
For a moment, we simply looked at each other.
Five years of marriage.
A beautiful daughter.
A shared home.
And now two people who barely knew how to speak.
“Thank you for coming,” he said.
I sat down.
“What did you want to discuss?”
He lowered himself into the opposite chair.
“I miss you.”
I looked at him.
“I know.”
