My eighteen-year-old brother reached for one piece of chicken at dinner, and my mother-in-law slapped him so hard his fork hit the plate. “You greedy little freeloader!” she screamed. My husband didn’t defend him. He looked at me and said, “Don’t make this worse.” Four years of keeping the peace ended right there—because Diane still believed she was standing in her son’s house.

Ethan closed his eyes.

I said nothing.

“I am willing to admit I should not have touched Noah.”

Touched.

Not slapped.

“But what happened afterward was completely unacceptable. You threw me from my son’s home. You threatened me with police. You humiliated me in front of Ethan.”

Ethan reached for the phone.

I stopped him.

I wanted to hear the rest.

“I think we both owe each other an apology,” Diane continued. “And I am willing to be the bigger person.”

I looked at Ethan.

His face had changed.

For once, he was hearing what I heard without immediately translating it into something kinder.

“Mom,” he said.

She stopped.

“Oh. You’re there.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t know Claire was putting me on speaker.”

“She didn’t. I’m sitting next to her.”

Silence.

Ethan took the phone.

“You slapped Noah.”

“I said I shouldn’t have touched him.”
