Minutes before Gavin Cole was strapped to the execution table, his eight-year-old daughter leaned close and whispered a sentence that made every guard freeze—

“Gavin came home early that night. He wasn’t supposed to.

He walked in while my mother was arguing with the prosecutor’s investigator in our kitchen.”

Mitchell looked up sharply.

The prosecutor’s investigator.

Gavin whispered, “I remember voices.”

The recording continued.

“They were talking about the file. The land contracts. The payments hidden under my name.

I had found copies in my mother’s safe. I was going to give them to Gavin because I was scared.”

There was a thud on the tape.

Then a shaky inhale.

“They needed someone to blame before the audit reached the county office. Gavin saw too much.

He saw the investigator give my mother an envelope. He saw the neighbor outside the window.

After that, they said there was only one way to bury everything.”

The investigator paused the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Mitchell picked

up the supplemental witness report again. The neighbor.
