She stepped
closer.
“Two people who
are choosing each other.”
He reached for her hand.
Then stopped.
Old fear returned to his face.
She noticed.
So she took his hand herself.
He looked down at their joined hands.
For the first time, he didn’t feel like he had won something.
He felt like he had been trusted with something precious.
Then she whispered,
“There’s one more thing.”
He looked up.
“I accepted a job.”
His smile disappeared.
“Where?”
“At the community center you started supporting.”
He blinked.
“You knew?”
“I figured it out.”
She laughed softly.
“You were never as mysterious as you thought.”
He laughed too.
And for the first time in years, the sound of his laughter filled the mansion.
—
One year later, the mansion looked different.
Not because the furniture had changed.
Not because another fortune had been made.
Because it finally felt like a home.
