My mother-in-law’s final note read, “Let’s see who comes for you now.”
What neither she nor my husband understood was that one emergency phrase could reach people they had never considered.
I knew something was wrong the moment I searched my suitcase.
My phone was gone.
So was the small waterproof pouch hidden beneath my clothes.
Inside that pouch had been my passport.
I searched the room twice, then checked the bathroom, bedside table, closet, and safe.
Nothing.
I ran barefoot toward the hotel lobby.
The receptionist looked up as I approached, clearly unsure what had happened.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“My husband,” I said. “Did he leave?”
She checked the computer.
