Silas turned sharply toward his mother, his jaw clenching with sudden irritation. “Mother, shut up.”
“Why, Silas?” Beatrice scoffed, waving her fur-trimmed sleeve dismissively. “Who is she going to tell? The state police? She’s a convicted murderer being transferred to a maximum-security cage tomorrow morning. Nobody listens to a dead woman.”
Silas looked back at me through the glass.
His eyes were triumphant, dripping with the intoxicating high of a predator who had just shown his prey the skeletons in his private closet.
*”I wanted you to have that little story, Eleanor,”* Silas whispered into the phone. *”To keep you company during those long winter nights in Bedford Hills. Every time you close your eyes, I want you to remember that you’re sitting in a cage for a murder you didn’t commit, while the man who killed twice is raising his son in a fifty-million-dollar palace in Dubai.”*
