We wake up thinking about everything we need to accomplish. We check our phones before we’ve even fully opened our eyes. We rush through breakfast, answer messages, work, shop, drive, cook, clean and prepare for tomorrow.

Our attention is constantly being pulled somewhere else.

As a result, we become surprisingly good at ignoring things.

A tree beside the road becomes background scenery.

An old building becomes part of the neighborhood.

A familiar face becomes someone we pass every morning.

A handwritten note becomes a piece of paper.

A photograph becomes just another photograph.

“Nothing special.”

There was no reason to stop.

No obvious mystery.

No remarkable detail.

Nothing that immediately separated it from everything else around it.

I almost walked away.

In fact, I probably would have if something hadn’t made me hesitate.
